Sie sagen wie. Die Hauptentscheidung liegt zwischen by für eine Methode und with für ein Werkzeug.

Deine erste Frage wird vorbereitet.
by oder with
- by antwortet auf «wie hast du es gemacht» — eine Methode, ein Vorgang, ein Reisemittel: by train, by email, by hand, by asking
- with antwortet auf «was hast du benutzt» — ein körperliches Werkzeug: with a hammer, with scissors
He opened it with a knife (das Werkzeug) / He opened it by cutting the tape (die Methode).
Beachte, dass by bei Verkehrsmitteln keinen Artikel nimmt: by car, by bus, by plane — nie by the car.
on foot
Die Ausnahme. Jedes Fahrzeug nimmt by, aber das Gehen nimmt on:
I go by bus, but today I came on foot.
Weitere feste on-Wendungen: on purpose, on the phone, on horseback, on tiptoe.
with für Gefühle
She handled it with great care. He accepted with obvious pride.
like oder as
- like vergleicht: He works like a machine. — er ist keine.
- as nennt eine Rolle: She works as a translator. — das ist ihr Beruf.
He speaks like a native heißt, er ist keiner. He speaks as a native würde heißen, er ist einer.
without
Danach ein Substantiv oder eine -ing-Form:
He left without a word. She signed it without reading it.
| Deutsch | Englisch |
|---|---|
| mit dem Zug, mit dem Auto | by train, by car |
| mit der Post, mit E-Mail | by post, by email |
| mit einem Messer | with a knife |
| mit großer Sorgfalt | with great care |
| zu Fuß | on foot |
Und by nimmt keinen Artikel. «mit dem Zug» → by train, nicht by the train.
Deutsch trennt diese beiden schon: «wie ein Profi» → like a professional, «als Übersetzerin arbeiten» → work as a translator.
«ohne zu fragen» nimmt die -ing-Form. without asking, nicht without to ask.
