- eine Fläche — etwas, worauf du Dinge legst → on
in the box, on the box, at the box sind alle möglich und bedeuten alle Verschiedenes.
Derselbe Ort, dreimal
- I’ll meet you at the cinema. — der Treffpunkt
- I saw it in the cinema. — im Gebäude
- There’s a poster on the cinema. — an seiner Wand
Städte, Gebäude, Adressen
- in bei Stadt, Land, Gegend: in Bergen, in Norway, in the north
- at bei einem Gebäude, wenn du seinen Zweck meinst: at school, at work, at the station
- in bei einem Gebäude, wenn du drinnen meinst: in the school, in the office
- at bei einer vollen Adresse, in bei einer Straße: at 14 King Street, in King Street
Verkehrsmittel
She got in the car and I got on the bus.
Feste Wendungen
at home, at work, at school, in bed, in hospital, on holiday, in the middle, at the top, on the left
Wo es für Deutschsprachige schiefgeht
«an der Wand» ist on the wall. Das deutsche an hat im Englischen kein eigenes Wort und verteilt sich auf on und at. Die Regel: ist es eine Fläche, nimm on; ist es ein Punkt, nimm at.
| Deutsch | Englisch |
|---|---|
| an der Wand, an der Tür (Bild) | on the wall, on the door |
| an der Tür (stehen), am Bahnhof | at the door, at the station |
| auf dem Tisch | on the table |
| auf der Straße | in the street (brit.), on the street (amerik.) |
«im Bus» ist on the bus. In allem, wo du aufstehen und gehen kannst, steht on: on the bus, on the train, on the plane, on a ship. Und on a bicycle, weil du oben sitzt.
Dasselbe bei at work gegen in the office und at university gegen in the university.
Die Richtung steckt im Englischen im Verb: go into oder einfach go to.
