¿In, on o at para el lugar?
In rodea, on toca, at señala un punto.
Usa in para algo cerrado — in the box, in Paris. Usa on para una superficie o una línea — on the table, on the wall. Usa at para un punto, una dirección o un evento — at the door, at work, at a concert.
¿Cuál necesitas?
| Relación | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| dentro de un área o un volumen | in | in the kitchen, in Spain, in the car |
| tocando una superficie | on | on the shelf, on the floor, on the wall |
| un punto, dirección o evento | at | at the bus stop, at 42 King St, at a wedding |
| transporte público | on | on the bus, on the train, on a plane |
| un coche particular | in | in the car, in a taxi |

in
- The photographs are in a thick album.
- We took a walk in the park, following the path that runs beside the river.
- The cat is hiding in the box we brought back from the store, and we cannot see her at all.
on
- The photo frame was placed on the shelf.
- He hung his coat on the hook by the stairs.
- The school is on the corner, its railings running the length of both streets.
at
- We will meet at the office tomorrow and go on to the client together.
- We met at the cafe as arranged, though it turned out to be closed for the holiday.
- We will meet at the park and decide from there whether to go in or carry on to the river.
- in — algo con bordes dentro de lo que estás: in the room, in the garden, in Italy
- on — una superficie, una línea o una lista: on the roof, on the river, on page 4
- at — un solo punto, sin interés por su forma: at the station, at the crossroads
Un café admite las tres. In the café es dentro. At the café es allí, como punto de encuentro. On the café sería en su tejado.
Donde caben dos
at school / in school. At school es estar en el recinto; in school es estar estudiando, lo que en inglés americano incluye la universidad.
in the corner / at the corner / on the corner. In the corner es dentro de una habitación. At the corner es donde se cruzan dos calles. On the corner es el edificio que está ahí.
in the front / at the front. In the front de un coche son los asientos delanteros. At the front de una cola es la cabeza.
arrive in / arrive at. Arrive in una ciudad o un país; arrive at un edificio, una estación, un evento. Nunca arrive to.
Transporte
- on the bus, the train, the plane, the ship, a bike, a horse
- in a car, a taxi, a van, a small boat, a helicopter
El patrón es más o menos el tamaño: si andas por dentro, lleva on; si te sientas y te quedas quieto, in.
Direcciones
in Spain → in Madrid → on Calle Mayor (inglés americano; el británico dice in Calle Mayor) → at 14 Calle Mayor
La dirección completa con número lleva siempre at.
Expresiones fijas con at
at home, at work, at school, at university, at the doctor’s, at a party, at a concert, at the top, at the bottom
Expresiones fijas con on
on the left, on the right, on the way, on the coast, on the beach, on a farm, on the road, on the page, on the menu, on television
|---|---|
| en la cocina | in the kitchen |
| en la estantería | on the shelf |
| en la parada | at the bus stop |
| en la pared | on the wall |
| en el autobús | on the bus |
| en el coche | in the car |
«Llegar a» no es arrive to.
At the door es junto a ella, esperando; in the doorway es dentro del hueco.
Incorrecto: She's in the bus. correcto: She's on the bus.
Autobuses, trenes, aviones y barcos llevan on. Coches y taxis llevan in.
Incorrecto: I live at Berlin. correcto: I live in Berlin.
Incorrecto: He's standing in the door. correcto: He's standing at the door.
At the door significa junto a ella. In the doorway sería dentro del hueco mismo.
Incorrecto: The picture is in the wall. correcto: The picture is on the wall.
On significa tocando la superficie. In the wall sería enterrado dentro de ella.
