advice, information, news, furniture, luggage, equipment, research, progress, work, money, traffic, weather, homework
a piece of advice, two pieces of furniture, a bit of news, a loaf of bread, a liter of water
some y any
El reparto habitual:
- some en frases afirmativas: There is some milk.
- any en negativas y preguntas: There isn’t any milk. Is there any milk?
Would you like some coffee? — Could I have some water?
much, many, a lot of
- many con contables: many books
- much con incontables: much time
- a lot of con los dos, y la opción natural en frases afirmativas: a lot of books, a lot of time
Much es raro en una frase afirmativa. There is much traffic suena rígido; There is a lot of traffic es lo que se dice.
a few y a little
- a few con contables: a few chairs
- a little con incontables: a little milk
two coffees (dos tazas) pero coffee is expensive (la sustancia) a paper (un periódico) pero paper is made from wood
- «Necesito un consejo» → I need some advice o a piece of advice.
- «Tengo mucho trabajo» → I have a lot of work, no many works.
- «Las noticias son buenas» → The news is good — singular.
- «Los muebles son nuevos» → The furniture is new — singular e incontable.
how much frente a how many no existe en español, donde «cuánto» y «cuántos» solo cambian por concordancia. En inglés la diferencia es de tipo de sustantivo: how many people, how much time.
Y «la gente» es plural en inglés: people are, no people is.
Todas las formas
| Contable singular | Contable plural | Incontable | |
|---|---|---|---|
| afirmativo | a chair | some chairs | some water |
| negativo | not a chair | not any chairs | not any water |
| pregunta | a chair? | any chairs? | any water? |
| cuánto | — | how many | how much |
| poca cantidad | — | a few | a little |

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: I have many works to do. correcto: I have a lot of work to do.
Work es incontable aquí: no tiene plural, y many es para contables.
Incorrecto: There isn't some milk left. correcto: There isn't any milk left.
Las frases negativas llevan any.
Incorrecto: How much people were there? correcto: How many people were there?
People es contable, así que how many.
