La estructura
Pasado detrás de if, would en el resultado:
If I knew the answer, I would tell you.
- If I spoke Italian, I would apply for that job. — no lo hablo.
- If I won the lottery, I would buy a boat.
If I win, I will buy a boat.
if I were you
If I were you, I’d say nothing.
Were se usa con todos los sujetos en este patrón, incluidos I, he y she. En el habla informal oirás if I was, pero were es la forma que esperan los exámenes y la fórmula fija la lleva siempre.
could y might
- If we left now, we could catch the ferry. — sería posible
- If you asked her, she might agree. — quizá
Peticiones corteses
It would be helpful if you could send it today.
No se pretende nada irreal. La gramática está haciendo educación.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«Si tuviera tiempo, te ayudaría» se corresponde pieza por pieza: subjuntivo español ↔ pasado inglés, condicional español ↔ would. Y «si yo fuera tú» ↔ if I were you incluso en el uso de la forma irregular.
Las dos trampas:
El condicional en la mitad con if. «Si tuviera» nunca es if I would have.
| Oración con if | Oración principal | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| past simple | would + verbo | If I had time, I would help. |
| past simple | could, might | If we left now, we might catch it. |
| were para todos los sujetos | would + verbo | If I were you, I'd wait. |
