El orden habitual
Cuatro huecos: palabra interrogativa — will — sujeto — verbo simple.
How long will the repairs take?
Cuando who es el sujeto
No se intercambia nada, porque no hay otro sujeto:
- Who will drive?
- What will happen next?
Compáralo con Who will you invite? — ahí quien invita eres tú, así que vuelve el orden normal.
Preguntas indirectas
En cuanto la pregunta va dentro de otra frase, el intercambio desaparece:
- directa: When will she arrive?
- indirecta: Do you know when she will arrive?
Mantener el orden de pregunta dentro — Do you know when will she arrive — es uno de los errores más comunes a este nivel.
How long will it take
La pregunta estándar sobre duración. Se contesta con about o con una cantidad a secas: About twenty minutes.
Fíjate en la diferencia con How long have you been waiting?, que pregunta por el tiempo ya gastado.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
El español mantiene el orden de pregunta dentro de la frase larga: «no sé cuándo llegará» y «¿cuándo llegará?» tienen el verbo en el mismo sitio. El inglés no: When will she arrive? pero I don’t know when she will arrive. Es el error más repetido de esta forma, y viene directamente del español.
Y «¿cuánto tardará?» es How long will it take?, con it obligatorio: en español el sujeto no aparece, y al traducir sale How long will take?

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: When you will arrive? correcto: When will you arrive?
Will va delante del sujeto.
Incorrecto: Who will he open the shop? correcto: Who will open the shop?
Cuando who hace la acción, no hay un segundo sujeto.
Incorrecto: I don't know when will he come. correcto: I don't know when he will come.
Dentro de una frase más larga desaparece el orden de pregunta y vuelve el orden normal.
