La estructura
Sujeto, modal, verbo simple. Nada concuerda:
I may go. She may go. They may go.
These results may indicate a seasonal effect.
may well
Añadir well sube la probabilidad de forma notable:
He may well be right. — más cerca de «probablemente».
may have y might have
They may have already left.
Might have cubre además lo que estuvo a punto de pasar: You might have broken your arm — no te pasó, pero estuvo cerca.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
La posibilidad pasada. «Puede que se haya ido» es She may have gone, con have más participio. El error típico es She might went, que mezcla el modal con un pasado.
«Puede que tenga razón». En español el verbo va en subjuntivo; en inglés va en forma simple detrás del modal: He may be right.
Y la escala completa merece aprenderse de una vez, porque el español la hace con adverbios («seguro», «probablemente», «quizá») y el inglés con verbos distintos: will, should, may, might, must.
Todas las formas
| Cuánta seguridad | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| seguro | will | It will rain. |
| probable | should | It should arrive today. |
| posible | may | It may rain. |
| menos probable | might, could | It might rain. |
| deducción | must | It must be raining — look at them. |
