La estructura
Se intercambian had y el sujeto:
You had seen it. → Had you seen it?
Hay una sola forma del auxiliar, así que no hay nada que elegir.
Las respuestas cortas repiten had
Had they arrived? — Yes, they had. / No, they hadn’t.
Comprobar un estado en un momento pasado
La pregunta casi siempre fija un momento del pasado y pregunta qué era ya verdad entonces:
- Had the meeting started when you got there?
- Had she already left?
ever y before
Las dos empujan la pregunta hacia atrás sobre todo un periodo hasta ese punto del pasado:
- Had you ever flown before that trip?
- Had he been to Oslo before?
Compara la versión en present perfect, que mide hasta ahora: Have you ever flown?
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«¿Habías terminado?» se traduce directamente como Had you finished?, y el orden es el mismo que en español una vez movido el auxiliar. El error típico es meter did por costumbre de los otros tiempos: Did you had finished? no existe.
Y el participio: «¿lo habías visto antes?» es Had you seen it before?, no Had you saw.
