La estructura
Not va justo detrás del verbo, y casi siempre se contrae:
I was not hungry. → I wasn’t hungry.
A diferencia de las formas de presente, aquí solo hay una contracción para cada una: no existe la segunda opción tipo he’s not.
there wasn’t y there weren’t
Otra vez el verbo concuerda con lo que viene detrás:
- There wasn’t any milk.
- There weren’t any eggs.
Suavizar con wasn’t
El inglés dice a menudo lo contrario en lugar de la cosa misma:
The film wasn’t bad suele significar que estuvo bastante bien. He wasn’t happy muchas veces significa que estaba molesto.
Esta forma de quedarse corto es habitual al hablar y conviene reconocerla al leer.
El patrón de contraste
Un negativo aquí prepara con frecuencia una corrección:
It wasn’t the noise that woke me, it was the light.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
El didn’t sobra: «no estaba en la reunión» es He wasn’t at the meeting, nunca He didn’t was.
Y el recurso de «no estuvo mal» para decir «estuvo bien» funciona igual en los dos idiomas, así que al leer inglés conviene tomárselo como en español: not bad es un elogio moderado, no una queja.

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: He didn't was at the meeting. correcto: He wasn't at the meeting.
Was lleva la negación él solo.
Incorrecto: We wasn't ready. correcto: We weren't ready.
We es plural, así que weren't.
Incorrecto: There weren't a problem. correcto: There wasn't a problem.
A problem es singular, y detrás de there el verbo concuerda con lo que sigue.
