El orden habitual
Tres huecos: palabra interrogativa — was o were — sujeto.
Why was the road closed?
El verbo concuerda con el sujeto que viene detrás, así que hay que mirar hacia delante: Where was the key? pero Where were the keys?
who was y what was
Cuando who o what es el sujeto, el orden no cambia, porque no hay con qué intercambiar:
- Who was driving?
- What was the noise?
Estas llevan was aunque la respuesta resulte ser plural.
How was it
How was it? es la manera estándar de preguntar por una experiencia terminada: un viaje, un examen, una comida. La respuesta es una valoración, no un relato.
Compáralo con What was it like?, que pide más detalle.
Medidas
La palabra interrogativa lleva un adjetivo o much directamente:
How long was the queue? How old were they? How much was the bill?
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«¿Cómo fue el viaje?» es How was the journey? y «¿cómo era?» es What was it like? Las dos empiezan por «cómo» en español, y la segunda pide like al final.
Y el precio va con how much, no con how: «¿cuánto costaron las entradas?» es How much were the tickets?

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: Where did you were? correcto: Where were you?
Did no se junta nunca con was ni were, haya palabra interrogativa o no.
Incorrecto: How was the tickets? correcto: How much were the tickets?
Tickets es plural, así que were — y how much es la pregunta para el precio.
