La estructura
Primero did, después el sujeto, después el verbo simple:
Did he call you? — Did the shop open?
Hay una sola forma del auxiliar, así que no hay nada que elegir.
Las respuestas cortas repiten did
Did you finish? — Yes, I did. o No, I didn’t.
Normalmente no se contesta Yes, I finished. La respuesta corta es la réplica estándar.
Preguntas con be
Si el verbo principal es be, no hay auxiliar. La pregunta se hace intercambiando:
- Was the film good?
- Were they at the station?
Mezclar los dos patrones — Did you were… — es el error más común aquí, y es fácil de pillar: pregúntate si el verbo es be.
Formas indirectas y más suaves
Para sonar menos brusco, el inglés envuelve la pregunta:
- Do you know whether he called?
- Could you tell me when the train left?
Fíjate en que dentro del envoltorio el orden vuelve a ser normal: sujeto, después verbo, y sin did.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«¿Llegaron?» no cambia de orden en español, y en inglés hace falta construir la pregunta con Did delante. Sin él, They arrived? se entiende pero suena a sorpresa, no a pregunta.
El otro resbalón es mezclar los dos patrones por culpa de «estar»: «¿estabas en casa?» tiene un verbo que en inglés es be, así que la pregunta es Were you at home? y no Did you were at home?

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: Did she went out? correcto: Did she go out?
Después de did, la forma simple.
Incorrecto: Did you were at home? correcto: Were you at home?
Be hace su propia pregunta. Did no aparece nunca con él.
