Preparando tu primera pregunta.
by o with
- by contesta a cómo lo hiciste — un método, un proceso, un medio de transporte: by train, by email, by hand, by asking
- with contesta a qué usaste — una herramienta física: with a hammer, with scissors
He opened it with a knife (la herramienta) / He opened it by cutting the tape (el método).
Fíjate en que by no lleva artículo con el transporte: by car, by bus, by plane — nunca by the car.
on foot
La excepción. Todos los vehículos llevan by, pero ir andando lleva on:
I go by bus, but today I came on foot.
Otras expresiones fijas con on: on purpose, on the phone, on horseback, on tiptoe.
with para los sentimientos
With introduce además la manera en que alguien hace algo:
She handled it with great care. He accepted with obvious pride.
like o as
- like compara: He works like a machine. — no lo es.
- as dice el papel: She works as a translator. — es su trabajo.
He speaks like a native significa que no lo es. He speaks as a native significaría que sí.
without
Va seguido de un sustantivo o de una forma en -ing:
He left without a word. She signed it without reading it.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«En tren» es by train. El español usa «en» para el transporte y el inglés usa by, sin artículo: by train, by car, by plane. Y «a pie» es on foot, no by foot.
«Con» y «por» no se reparten igual. «Lo cortó con un cuchillo» es with, y eso coincide; pero «lo hizo por correo» es by email, donde el español dice «por».
«Como» se parte en dos. Like compara, as dice lo que uno es: «habla como un nativo» (y no lo es) es like; «trabaja como traductora» (lo es) es as. El español usa «como» para las dos, y el error cambia el sentido de la frase.
Y detrás de without va el gerundio: «sin leerlo» es without reading it, no without to read.
