El orden habitual
Cuatro huecos: palabra interrogativa — be — sujeto — la forma en -ing.
Where is he going?
- Who is making that noise?
- What is burning?
Compáralo con Who are you calling?
What are you doing
- What are you doing? — ahora mismo, en este momento.
- What are you doing on Friday? — sobre un plan ya hecho.
How long are you staying
Con una cita futura, how long pregunta por la duración de una visita o una estancia. La respuesta lleva for: For three nights.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«¿Qué estás haciendo?» y «¿por qué está llorando?» mantienen el orden al traducir, y de ahí salen What you are doing? y Why she is crying?
Y conviene separar los dos sentidos de What do you do? y What are you doing?: el primero pregunta a qué te dedicas, el segundo qué estás haciendo.

Incorrecto: What you are doing? correcto: What are you doing?
Be va delante del sujeto, no detrás.
Incorrecto: Who is he cooking dinner? correcto: Who is cooking dinner?
Incorrecto: Why she is crying? correcto: Why is she crying?
La palabra interrogativa no anula el intercambio.
