El orden habitual
Tres huecos: palabra interrogativa — am, is o are — sujeto.
Why is the door open?
El verbo sigue concordando con el sujeto que viene detrás, así que hay que mirar hacia delante antes de elegir: Where is the key? pero Where are the keys?
who is y what is
Cuando who o what es el sujeto, el orden no cambia, porque no hay con qué intercambiar:
- Who is at the door?
- What is in the box?
Who is at the door? — My parents.
How old are you? How far is the station? How long is the film? How much is this?
What y how con personas
What is she like? pregunta por el carácter. How is she? pregunta por la salud o el ánimo. What does she look like? pregunta por el aspecto — y esa, por usar look, necesita el patrón con do.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
«¿Cuántos años tienes?» cambia de verbo. Es How old are you?, no How many years do you have?
How much is it? y How much does it cost? son las dos naturales. How much is cost? mezcla las dos.

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: Where is my keys? correcto: Where are my keys?
Incorrecto: How old do you are? correcto: How old are you?
Incorrecto: What means this word? correcto: What does this word mean?
Mean es un verbo normal, así que la pregunta pasa a do y does.
