Dos columnas, una diferencia
My necesita un sustantivo detrás. Mine sustituye al sustantivo:
That is my coat. → That coat is mine.
His es el raro: hace los dos trabajos con la misma escritura. His coat y the coat is his son las dos correctas.
No hay forma para it
No existe un its que vaya solo. Si lo necesitas, repite el sustantivo:
The handle is broken — no Its is broken.
Sin apóstrofos
Mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs — ninguno lo lleva, nunca. Their’s y your’s están siempre mal.
a friend of mine
Un patrón fijo que usa la forma suelta detrás de of:
a friend of mine, a colleague of hers, an old habit of his
Significa «uno de mis amigos», y en casi cualquier frase suena mejor que one of my friends.
Contestar a whose
La forma suelta es la que contesta a la pregunta:
Whose is this? — Mine. / It’s hers.
Dónde se tuerce para un hispanohablante
Aquí el español ayuda mucho: la pareja my/mine funciona igual que «mi/el mío», y a friend of mine es literalmente «un amigo mío», con la misma construcción.
Lo que no coincide: en español «el mío» lleva artículo y en inglés mine va solo — This one is mine, no the mine.
Y el apóstrofo: theirs y yours no lo llevan nunca, aunque el oído pida separar la -s.

Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: This is mine book. correcto: This is my book. / This book is mine.
Mine no puede ir delante de un sustantivo.
Incorrecto: The house is their's. correcto: The house is theirs.
Los pronombres posesivos no llevan nunca apóstrofo.
Incorrecto: Its is broken. correcto: It's broken. / The handle is broken.
No existe forma de pronombre posesivo para it.
