¿This, that, these o those?
Cuatro palabras, dos preguntas. Cuántas cosas, y a qué distancia.
La respuesta corta
This y these señalan lo que está cerca; that y those, lo que está más lejos. This y that son singulares; these y those, plurales. Así: this book, these books, that book over there, those books over there.
¿Cuál necesitas?
| Cerca | Lejos | |
|---|---|---|
| Una cosa | this chair | that chair |
| Varias cosas | these chairs | those chairs |

this
- This letter in my hand is from the bank.
- This path we are walking on leads to the river.
- This fence we are looking at now is on the old map as well.
that
- Do you see that bicycle across the road?
- That painting over there is part of the old collection.
- That shop in the distance is much better than the rest.
these
- These pears in my basket are not ripe yet.
- These jars I just opened smell of vinegar.
- These lamps right next to us are worth keeping.
those
- Do you see those paintings across the road?
- Those barrels over there are exactly what I needed.
- Those suitcases on the far side of the hall are included in the price.
- Pass me this one. — la que tengo en la mano
- Pass me that one. — la de allí
El número es la mitad fácil: this y that llevan una cosa, these y those llevan varias. El verbo sigue: this is, these are.
- this morning — hoy
- that morning — una mañana del pasado
- these days — ahora
- those days — entonces
Así que in those days significa hace mucho, y at this point significa ahora.
Solas, sin sustantivo
Las cuatro funcionan sin sustantivo detrás:
- This is my brother.
- That was unexpected.
- These are the ones I meant.
- I’ll take those.
Cuidado con las personas: this is my brother está bien al presentar, pero that man para alguien presente es brusco. Usa un nombre, o he.
- Hello, this is Anna. — identificándote
- Is that Peter?
- She’s resigning. — That’s a surprise.
- He didn’t call. That bothers me.
This is what worries me: nobody checked.
Those who
Those who arrive late will wait outside.
Expresión fija, siempre plural, y nunca these who.
«Soy Ana» es This is Anna — no I am Anna ni That is Anna. Y «¿eres Pedro?» es Is that Peter? Conviene aprender las dos como fórmulas fijas.
Y «los que» es those who: «los que lleguen tarde» es those who arrive late, siempre plural.
Errores que evitar
Incorrecto: I like this shoes. correcto: I like these shoes.
Incorrecto: Those is my keys. correcto: Those are my keys.
Those es plural y lleva are.
Incorrecto: Hello, that is Anna speaking. correcto: Hello, this is Anna speaking.
Por teléfono te identificas con this y preguntas por el otro con that: is that Anna?
