Votre première question arrive.
L’ordre habituel
Trois places : mot interrogatif — was ou were — sujet.
Why was the road closed?
Le verbe s’accorde avec le sujet qui suit, donc regardez devant : Where was the key? mais Where were the keys?
who was et what was
Quand who ou what est le sujet, l’ordre ne change pas, parce qu’il n’y a rien avec quoi inverser :
- Who was driving?
- What was the noise?
How was it
Comparez What was it like?, qui invite à plus de détail.
How long was the queue? How old were they? How much was the bill?
|---|---|
| Comment c’était ? | How was it? — un jugement |
| C’était comment ? | What was it like? — des détails |
How was it? attend « bien », « pas mal », « épuisant ». What was it like? attend un récit.
» → How old were they?
- « Combien coûtait l’addition ? » → How much was the bill?
- « Combien de temps durait le film ? » → How long was the film?
C’est la deuxième erreur ci-dessus, en partie : How was the tickets se trompe à la fois de mot interrogatif et d’accord.
« Où étiez-vous ? » se transpose directement. L’inversion après le mot interrogatif existe en français : Where were you? ← « Où étiez-vous ? ».
» → What was the noise?
Where was the key? contre Where were the keys?

Incorrect : Where did you were? correct : Where were you?
Did ne voisine jamais avec was ni were, mot interrogatif ou pas.
Incorrect : How was the tickets? correct : How much were the tickets?
Tickets est pluriel, donc were — et how much est la question du prix.
