Votre première question arrive.
by ou with
- by répond à comment avez-vous fait — une méthode, un procédé, un moyen de transport : by train, by email, by hand, by asking
- with répond à qu’avez-vous employé — un outil matériel : with a hammer, with scissors
He opened it with a knife (l’outil) / He opened it by cutting the tape (la méthode).
Notez que by ne prend pas d’article avec les transports : by car, by bus, by plane — jamais by the car.
on foot
L’exception.
I go by bus, but today I came on foot.
Autres locutions avec on : on purpose, on the phone, on horseback, on tiptoe.
She handled it with great care. He accepted with obvious pride.
like ou as
- like compare : He works like a machine. — il n’en est pas une.
- as énonce un rôle : She works as a translator. — c’est son métier.
He speaks like a native veut dire qu’il n’en est pas un. He speaks as a native voudrait dire qu’il en est un.
without
Suivi d’un nom ou d’une forme en -ing :
He left without a word. She signed it without reading it.
|---|---|---|
| Il parle comme un natif | He speaks like a native | il n’en est pas un |
| Elle travaille comme traductrice | She works as a translator | c’est son métier |
| Il travaille comme une machine | He works like a machine | comparaison |
| En tant que médecin, je dirais… | As a doctor, I’d say…
« En train » donne by train, pas in train. Votre « en » devant un transport correspond à by :
| français | anglais |
|---|---|
| en train | by train |
| en voiture | by car |
| en avion | by plane |
| à vélo | by bike |
| à pied | on foot |
« À la main » donne by hand. Votre « à » devant une méthode correspond à by :
- « à la main » → by hand
- « par courriel » → by email
- « en vérifiant » → by checking
|---|---|
| au téléphone | on the phone |
| exprès | on purpose |
| à cheval | on horseback |
| en silence | in silence |
| au crayon | in pencil |
| pressé | in a hurry |
