The pattern
Only will moves:
You will be working. → Will you be working?
Short answers use will
Will she be joining us? — Yes, she will. / No, she won’t.
The question that asks without asking
This is the tense’s most useful trick. The Continuous question enquires about a fact; the simple question makes a request:
- Will you be going to the post office? — I am asking what you are doing.
- Will you go to the post office? — I am asking you to go.
Because the first puts no obligation on anyone, it is the polite default in service situations: Will you be staying another night? Will you be paying by card?
Checking before you ask
The Continuous question is often the first half of a favor:
Will you be driving past the station? — Yes. — Could you drop me off?
