In, on ou at para o lugar?
In envolve, on toca, at aponta um ponto.
A resposta curta
Use in para algo fechado — in the box, in Paris. Use on para uma superfície ou uma linha — on the table, on the wall. Use at para um ponto, um endereço ou um evento — at the door, at work, at a concert.
De qual você precisa?
| Relação | Forma | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| dentro de uma área ou de um volume | in | in the kitchen, in Spain, in the car |
| em contato com uma superfície | on | on the shelf, on the floor, on the wall |
| um ponto, um endereço ou um evento | at | at the bus stop, at 42 King St, at a wedding |
| transporte coletivo | on | on the bus, on the train, on a plane |
| um carro particular | in | in the car, in a taxi |

Lado a lado
in
- The photographs are in a thick album.
- We took a walk in the park, following the path that runs beside the river.
- The cat is hiding in the box we brought back from the store, and we cannot see her at all.
on
- The photo frame was placed on the shelf.
- He hung his coat on the hook by the stairs.
- The school is on the corner, its railings running the length of both streets.
at
- We will meet at the office tomorrow and go on to the client together.
- We met at the cafe as arranged, though it turned out to be closed for the holiday.
- We will meet at the park and decide from there whether to go in or carry on to the river.
- in — algo com bordas, dentro do que você está: in the room, in the garden, in Italy
- on — uma superfície, uma linha ou uma lista: on the roof, on the river, on page 4
- at — um ponto só, sem interesse pela forma dele: at the station, at the crossroads
Um café admite os três. In the café é dentro. At the café é lá, como ponto de encontro. On the café seria no telhado dele.
Onde dois servem
at school / in school. At school é estar no terreno da escola; in school é estar matriculado, o que no inglês americano inclui a faculdade.
in the corner / at the corner / on the corner. In the corner é num canto de sala. At the corner é onde duas ruas se cruzam. On the corner é o prédio que fica ali.
in the front / at the front. In the front de um carro são os assentos da frente. At the front de uma fila é a cabeça dela.
arrive in / arrive at. Arrive in uma cidade ou um país; arrive at um prédio, uma estação, um evento. Nunca arrive to.
- on the bus, the train, the plane, the ship, a bike, a horse
- in a car, a taxi, a van, a small boat, a helicopter
in Brazil → in São Paulo → on Rua Augusta (inglês americano; o britânico diz in Rua Augusta) → at 42 Rua Augusta
Um endereço completo, com número, leva sempre at.
Expressões fixas com at
at home, at work, at school, at university, at the doctor’s, at a party, at a concert, at the top, at the bottom
Expressões fixas com on
on the left, on the right, on the way, on the coast, on the beach, on a farm, on the road, on the page, on the menu, on television
|---|---|
| na cozinha | in the kitchen |
| no carro | in the car |
| na prateleira | on the shelf |
| na praia | on the beach |
| na parede | on the wall |
| no ponto de ônibus | at the bus stop |
| na porta | at the door |
| no ônibus | on the bus |
- é um pontinho no mapa → at
«Na parede» é on, não in. O seu «em» não diz se é dentro ou se é a superfície. É o quarto erro da lista: The picture is on the wall, porque ele a toca. In the wall quereria dizer embutido dentro dela.
O mesmo vale para «no teto» → on the ceiling, «no terceiro andar» → on the third floor, «na página 4» → on page 4.
«No ônibus» é on, e «no carro» é in.
«Moro em Berlim» é in.
- «Cheguei na estação» ou «cheguei à estação» → I arrive at the station
- «Cheguei em Paris» ou «cheguei a Paris» → I arrive in Paris
Nem «a» dá to, nem «em» dá in automaticamente. Com arrive, é sempre at para um prédio e in para uma cidade.
Com go e come, por outro lado, to está certo: «vou para a estação» → I’m going to the station.
At the door é ao lado dela, esperando; in the doorway é no vão.
Erros a evitar
Errado: She's in the bus. certo: She's on the bus.
Ônibus, trens, aviões e navios levam on. Carros e táxis levam in.
Errado: I live at Berlin. certo: I live in Berlin.
Cidades e países são áreas, então levam in.
Errado: He's standing in the door. certo: He's standing at the door.
At the door quer dizer ao lado dela. In the doorway seria no vão mesmo.
Errado: The picture is in the wall. certo: The picture is on the wall.
On quer dizer em contato com a superfície. In the wall seria enterrado dentro dela.
