advice, information, news, furniture, luggage, equipment, research, progress, work, money, traffic, weather, homework
a piece of advice, two pieces of furniture, a bit of news, a loaf of bread, a liter of water
some e any
A divisão de sempre:
- some em frases afirmativas: There is some milk.
- any em negativas e perguntas: There isn’t any milk. Is there any milk?
Would you like some coffee? — Could I have some water?
much, many, a lot of
- many com contáveis: many books
- much com incontáveis: much time
- a lot of com os dois, e é a escolha natural em frases afirmativas: a lot of books, a lot of time
Much é incomum em frase afirmativa. There is much traffic soa engessado; There is a lot of traffic é o que se diz.
a few e a little
- a few com contáveis: a few chairs
- a little com incontáveis: a little milk
two coffees (duas xícaras) mas coffee is expensive (a substância) a paper (um jornal) mas paper is made from wood
Todas as formas
| Contável singular | Contável plural | Incontável | |
|---|---|---|---|
| afirmativa | a chair | some chairs | some water |
| negativa | not a chair | not any chairs | not any water |
| pergunta | a chair? | any chairs? | any water? |
| quanto | — | how many | how much |
| pouca quantidade | — | a few | a little |

Erros a evitar
Errado: I have many works to do. certo: I have a lot of work to do.
Work aqui é incontável: não tem plural, e many é para contáveis.
Errado: There isn't some milk left. certo: There isn't any milk left.
Frases negativas levam any.
Errado: How much people were there? certo: How many people were there?
People é contável, então how many.
