Condicional de tipo zero

O padrão

Present simple nos dois lados:

If you mix blue and yellow, you get green.

Nada aqui trata do futuro. A frase descreve o que acontece todas as vezes.

Note que aqui o português usa o indicativo, não o subjuntivo: «se você mistura azul e amarelo, dá verde». Nisso as duas línguas coincidem.

if ou when

No tipo zero elas querem dizer quase a mesma coisa, porque a condição sempre se cumpre:

If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils. When water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.

When é um pouco mais forte: diz que a condição ocorre com certeza. If deixa uma folga.

Instruções

Troque a segunda metade por um imperativo e você tem a linguagem dos manuais e dos avisos de segurança:

• If the alarm sounds, leave by the nearest exit.
• If the light flashes, check the connection.

Hábitos, não só ciência

O tipo zero não serve só à física. Ele cobre qualquer coisa confiável:
