O padrão
Not se prende ao modal, e can é o único verbo inglês cuja negativa completa se escreve numa palavra só: cannot.
She cannot attend. — escrita formal. She can’t attend. — todo o resto.
Could not fica em duas palavras, encurtando-se em couldn’t.
can’t como impossibilidade
Este é o sentido que quem aprende encontra menos, e ele importa:
He can’t be at home — I’ve just seen him at the office.
Aqui can’t é uma conclusão, não uma afirmação sobre capacidade. A versão afirmativa usa must:
He must be at home; the lights are on.
Para o passado, use can’t have e must have:
She can’t have heard you. He must have left early.
O português acompanha: «não pode ter te ouvido», «deve ter saído cedo».
couldn’t serve para os dois passados
Ao contrário da afirmativa, a negativa não precisa de wasn’t able to:
He couldn’t open the door. — tanto para incapacidade geral quanto para um fracasso específico.

Can’t é a maneira cotidiana de enunciar uma regra:
You can’t park here between eight and six.
Em alguns contextos é mais seco que mustn’t, em outros mais suave, e os dois são usados em placas.
