De onde vem a obrigação
O teste clássico é quem a impõe:
- I must call my mother. — eu decidi; ninguém está me obrigando.
- I have to renew my passport. — as regras exigem.
Os dois estão certos na maioria das frases, e os americanos usam have to em quase todas. Onde a diferença aparece com clareza é em placas e regulamentos, que levam must: Passengers must show a ticket.
should para conselho
Should não obriga ninguém. Dá uma opinião sobre o melhor caminho:
You should take the earlier flight.
Existem versões mais fortes — ought to quer dizer o mesmo e é um pouco mais formal; had better carrega um aviso: You had better leave now dá a entender que algo ruim acontece se você não for.
have got to
No inglês britânico falado, have got to substitui have to:
I*’ve got to** go.*
Não tem forma de passado, então had to cobre o passado dos dois.
should have
Para dizer qual teria sido a melhor escolha no passado:
You should have told me. — você não disse, e isso foi um erro.
O português diz igual: «você deveria ter me contado».
