Past Continuous: frases negativas

Not entra entre was ou were e a forma em -ing.

O padrão

Not entra depois do auxiliar:

He was not sleeping. → He wasn’t sleeping.

Há uma só contração para cada forma, então não há nada a escolher: wasn’t e weren’t.

Corrigindo uma suposição

A negativa neste tempo nega muitas vezes o que o outro acabou de supor, e a correção vem no mesmo fôlego:

I wasn’t ignoring you, I was on a call.

As duas metades ficam no Continuous, e as duas versões do mesmo momento ficam lado a lado.

Com when e while

A negativa funciona em qualquer metade da dupla:

• When you phoned, I wasn’t working.
• While the others weren’t looking, he left.

Verbos de estado, de novo

Como os verbos de estado não aceitam -ing, a negativa passada deles é Past Simple:

I didn’t know. — e não I wasn’t knowing.
