O padrão
O auxiliar concorda com o sujeito; a forma em -ing nunca muda:
I was waiting. You were waiting. She was waiting.
A escrita da forma em -ing segue as mesmas três regras do presente: o -e mudo cai, a consoante final dobra depois de uma vogal breve, -ie vira -y.
Montando um cenário
A descrição de um momento passado usa muitas vezes vários Continuous em sequência, deixando o Simple para o que finalmente aconteceu:
The rain was falling, the shops were closing and nobody was waiting at the stop. Then a bus appeared.
É essa última frase no Past Simple que faz a narrativa andar.
Numa hora dita
Com hora marcada, o Continuous diz que a ação já estava em curso:
- At nine I was driving to work. — a viagem começou antes.
- At nine I drove to work. — a viagem começou às nove.
Duas ações correndo juntas
While liga duas ações longas, as duas no Continuous:
She was revising while her brother was watching television.

Erros a evitar
Errado: The children was playing outside. certo: The children were playing outside.
Children é plural, então leva were.
Errado: At six o'clock I had dinner and the phone rang. certo: At six o'clock I was having dinner when the phone rang.
O jantar já estava em curso, então leva o Continuous.
