O padrão
Troque de lugar os dois primeiros elementos:
You were waiting. → Were you waiting?
Nenhum auxiliar é acrescentado, porque o tempo já tem um.
As respostas curtas ficam com o auxiliar
Were you watching? — Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.
Perguntando o que a pessoa estava fazendo
Essas perguntas normalmente fixam um momento e indagam o que já corria então:
- Were you sleeping when I called?
- Was it raining at the time?
A resposta muitas vezes prepara um fato no Past Simple: Yes, and then the alarm went off.
Educado e cauteloso
O Past Continuous suaviza um pedido ou uma pergunta sobre intenções:
I was wondering whether you had a moment.
Nada aí é realmente passado — o tempo verbal está trabalhando para a cortesia, não para o tempo.
