Ponha had na frente do sujeito. O particípio passado fica onde está.

O particípio passado é a terceira forma das tabelas de verbos: written, gone, built. Ele nunca muda com o sujeito.

O padrão

Troque had e o sujeito de lugar:

You had seen it. → Had you seen it?

Há uma só forma de auxiliar, então não há nada a escolher.

As respostas curtas repetem had

Had they arrived? — Yes, they had. / No, they hadn’t.

Conferindo um estado num momento passado

A pergunta quase sempre fixa um momento passado e indaga o que já era verdade então:

• Had the meeting started when you got there?
• Had she already left?

ever e before

Os dois empurram a pergunta para todo um período até aquele ponto passado:

• Had you ever flown before that trip?
• Had he been to Oslo before?

Compare com a versão no Present Perfect, que mede até hoje: Have you ever flown?
