Sujeito, depois was ou were, depois a descrição. Nada mais é necessário:

The room was empty.

Singular mesmo quando parece plural

Algumas palavras terminam em -s mas contam como uma coisa só e levam was:

A última vale notar: uma soma de dinheiro ou uma medida é tratada como uma quantia única.

O verbo olha para a frente, não para trás:

Used to e was

Para um hábito passado repetido, o inglês muitas vezes prefere used to:

There used to be a bakery on this corner.

There was a bakery afirma um fato sobre um momento. There used to be diz que durou um tempo e parou — perto do imperfeito português, «havia uma padaria».
