O padrão
Did vem primeiro, depois o sujeito, depois o verbo na forma base:
Did he call you? — Did the shop open?
Há uma única forma de auxiliar, então não há nada a escolher.
As respostas curtas repetem did
Did you finish? — Yes, I did. ou No, I didn’t.
Normalmente não se responde Yes, I finished. A resposta curta é a réplica padrão.
Perguntas com be
Se o verbo principal é be, não há auxiliar. A pergunta se faz pela troca de lugar:
- Was the film good?
- Were they at the station?
Misturar os dois padrões — Did you were… — é o erro mais comum aqui, e é fácil de pegar: pergunte-se se o verbo é be.
Formas mais suaves e indiretas
Para soar menos seco, o inglês embrulha a pergunta:
- Do you know whether he called?
- Could you tell me when the train left?
Note que dentro do embrulho a ordem das palavras volta ao normal: sujeito, depois verbo, e nenhum did.
