Elas introduzem algo inesperado.

- despite e in spite of levam substantivo: despite the delay
- although, though e even though levam oração: although we were delayed
Despite it was raining é esse transporte.
Transformando uma na outra
Acrescente ou tire um verbo:
Although the hotel was expensive… → Despite the expense…
Se quiser manter o verbo com despite, use the fact that:
Despite the fact that the hotel was expensive…
but, yet e however
- but liga duas orações numa frase: It was expensive, but we booked it.
It was expensive, yet we booked it.
- however começa uma frase nova, ou vem depois de um ponto e vírgula: It was expensive. However, we booked it.
However leva vírgula depois.
while e whereas
He likes cities, whereas I prefer the countryside.
Nada aqui é surpreendente — as duas metades são simplesmente diferentes. É isso que as separa de although.
Um conector por frase
O inglês usa um, e só um:
Although it was late, we stayed. ✓ Although it was late, but we stayed. ✗
