Sua primeira pergunta está vindo.
above ou over
As duas querem dizer mais alto, e em muitas frases qualquer uma serve: the lamp above / over the table.
A diferença aparece em três casos:
- movimento atravessando leva over: He climbed over the fence.
- cobrindo leva over: She pulled a blanket over her knees.
- medidas e níveis levam above: above sea level, above average
below ou under
O mesmo padrão, ao contrário:
- diretamente abaixo, muitas vezes tocando ou coberto → under: under the bed, under a blanket
- mais baixo numa escala → below: below zero, below average, below the surface
O português usa «abaixo de» e «embaixo de» com uma divisão parecida, e a pista funciona: «embaixo da cama» / «abaixo de zero».
between ou among
- between — duas coisas, ou algumas que você poderia nomear: between the two houses, between Monday and Friday
- among — um grupo que você não conta: among the trees, among friends
O português usa «entre» para os dois, então esta é uma distinção nova: «entre as árvores» é among the trees, e não between.
inside e outside
As duas podem aparecer sem substantivo, e então são advérbios:
Come inside. / Come inside the house.
behind e in front of
Note que in front of tem três palavras e quer dizer na parte dianteira de algo, por fora. In the front of quer dizer dentro, na sua parte dianteira:
The car is in front of the house. — fora dela. I sat in the front of the car. — dentro dele.
opposite
Quer dizer de frente para, o que não é o mesmo que in front of:
The bakery is opposite the bank. — uma encara a outra, do outro lado da rua.
