O padrão

Not entra depois do primeiro auxiliar:

She has not been sleeping. → She hasn’t been sleeping.

A ordem nunca varia: have ou has, not, been, -ing.

Not for long, not since

A negativa normalmente diz quão pouco aconteceu, e leva as mesmas palavras de duração:

• They haven’t been living here long.
• It hasn’t been raining since Tuesday.

Negando uma suposição

Como nos outros tempos contínuos, a negativa muitas vezes corrige o que o outro está pensando:

I haven’t been avoiding you — I*’ve been** away.*

As duas metades ficam no mesmo tempo, e o contraste sai claro.

A forma simples muitas vezes é melhor

Quando você quer negar que algo aconteceu, e não negar a duração, o Present Perfect comum é a escolha natural:

I haven’t read it. — não comecei ou não terminei. I haven’t been reading it. — não ando dedicando tempo a isso.
