O padrão
Sujeito, depois a forma certa de be, depois o que o descreve:
The road is narrow. The roads are narrow.
Não há nada mais a acrescentar. Este é o padrão de frase completa mais curto do inglês.
Quais palavras contam como singular
Tudo o que você poderia substituir por he, she ou it leva is:
- um nome: Anna is here.
- uma coisa só: The bridge is closed.
- um substantivo incontável: The news is good. Money is tight.
- um grupo tratado como um: The team is ready.
- everybody, nobody, everything: Everyone is waiting.
Dois substantivos ligados por and são plural: Anna and Tom are here.
there is e there are
Para dizer que algo existe, o inglês usa there mais be, e o verbo concorda com o substantivo que vem depois:
- There is a problem.
- There are two problems.
Numa enumeração, o verbo segue o primeiro item: There is a table and four chairs.
Note a diferença com o português: «há» e «tem» não mudam no singular e no plural, mas o inglês muda.
it is para tempo, hora e distância
Essas frases não têm sujeito de verdade, e o inglês fornece it:
It is raining. It is half past six. It is two kilometers to the station.
O português dispensa o sujeito — «está chovendo», «são seis e meia» — e o inglês não.

Erros a evitar
Errado: My family are large. certo: My family is large.
Uma palavra de grupo conta como uma coisa só no inglês americano, então leva is.
Errado: There is many people outside. certo: There are many people outside.
Depois de there, o verbo concorda com o que vem a seguir. People é plural, então are.
