Sua primeira pergunta está vindo.
A ordem de sempre
Três lugares: palavra interrogativa — am, is ou are — sujeito.
Why is the door open?
O verbo continua concordando com o sujeito que vem depois dele, então olhe adiante antes de escolher: Where is the key? mas Where are the keys?
who is e what is
Quando who ou what é o próprio sujeito, a ordem não muda, porque não há com o que trocar:
- Who is at the door?
- What is in the box?
Eles levam is mesmo quando a resposta acaba sendo plural: Who is at the door? — My parents.
Perguntando sobre medidas
Um grupo de perguntas põe o adjetivo logo depois da palavra interrogativa:
How old are you? How far is the station? How long is the film? How much is this?
O verbo continua vindo antes do sujeito, exatamente como antes.
What e how com pessoas
What is she like? pergunta pelo caráter. How is she? pergunta pela saúde ou pelo humor. What does she look like? pergunta pela aparência — e essa, por usar look, precisa do padrão com do.
Em português as três se resolvem com «como ela é» e «como ela está», e a divisão não coincide: vale decorar as três perguntas inglesas inteiras.

Erros a evitar
Errado: Where is my keys? certo: Where are my keys?
Keys é plural, e o verbo concorda com ele mesmo vindo depois.
Errado: How old do you are? certo: How old are you?
Be não precisa de auxiliar, com ou sem palavra interrogativa.
Errado: What means this word? certo: What does this word mean?
Mean é um verbo comum, então a pergunta passa para do e does.
