Anna lost her passport. — her porque Anna é mulher, seja o passaporte o que for. Tom lost his keys.
O inglês já nasce resolvido: your, his, her, their são quatro palavras diferentes.
its, it’s, their, they’re, your, you’re
|---|---|
| its paw | it’s raining (it is) |
| their car | they’re late (they are) |
| your coat | you’re right (you are) |
Os possessivos nunca levam apóstrofo. Se você consegue expandir para it is, they are ou you are, então leva.
Partes do corpo e roupas
O inglês põe possessivo onde o português põe artigo:
He broke his arm. She put on her coat. Wash your hands.
«Quebrou o braço» e «lavou as mãos» viram his arm e your hands.
whose
A forma de pergunta, e ela não é who’s:
Whose coat is this? — Who’s coming? é who is.
