Not цепляется к модальному, и can — единственный английский глагол, чьё полное отрицание пишется одним словом: cannot.
She cannot attend. — официальное письмо. She can’t attend. — всё остальное.
Could not остаётся двумя словами и сокращается до couldn’t.
can’t как невозможность
Это значение изучающим попадается реже, а оно важно:
He can’t be at home — I’ve just seen him at the office.
Здесь can’t — вывод, а не высказывание об умении. Утвердительная пара берёт must:
He must be at home; the lights are on.
Для прошлого берут can’t have и must have:
She can’t have heard you. He must have left early.
couldn’t годится для обоих прошедших случаев
В отличие от утверждения, отрицанию wasn’t able to не нужен:
He couldn’t open the door. — и о неумении вообще, и об одной неудаче.
Отказы и правила
Can’t — повседневный способ изложить правило:
You can’t park here between eight and six.
В одних случаях оно звучит резче, чем mustn’t, в других мягче, и на табличках в ходу оба.
