Past Perfect: отрицательные предложения

Ставьте not после had. Третья форма не меняется.

Третья форма глагола — та, что стоит последней в таблицах: written, gone, built. Она никогда не меняется по подлежащему.

Схема

Not идёт сразу после had и почти всегда сокращается до hadn’t:

He had not arrived. → He hadn’t arrived.

Объяснение, что пошло не так

Отрицательный Past Perfect очень часто поставляет причину прошлой неприятности:

• We couldn’t get in because I hadn’t brought the key.
• She failed the test — she hadn’t revised.

Главная часть идёт в Past Simple; объяснение шагает назад.

never, not yet

Оба подходят естественно, причём never заменяет not, а не присоединяется к нему:

• I had never eaten oysters before that evening.
• The parcel hadn’t arrived yet when I left.

С wish и if only

Сожаление о прошлом берёт Past Perfect, и отрицание здесь обычно:

I wish I hadn’t said that. If only we hadn’t missed the train.
