Предлоги места: between, above, under

Предлоги, размещающие одно относительно другого. Несколько идут парами, которые легко спутать.

above или over

Оба значат «выше», и во многих предложениях годится любой: the lamp above / over the table.

Разница видна в двух случаях:

• движение через берёт over: He climbed over the fence.
• накрывание берёт over: She pulled a blanket over her knees.
• меры и уровни берут above: above sea level, above average

below или under

Та же схема, в обратную сторону:

• прямо под, часто касаясь или накрыв → under: under the bed, under a blanket
• ниже по шкале → below: below zero, below average, below the surface

between или among

• between — двое или несколько, которых можно назвать: between the two houses, between Monday and Friday
• among — группа, которую не считают: among the trees, among friends

inside и outside

Оба могут стоять без существительного, и тогда это наречия:

Come inside. / Come inside the house.

behind и in front of

Заметьте, что in front of — три слова и значит «перед чем-то снаружи». А in the front of значит «внутри, в передней части»:

The car is in front of the house. — снаружи. I sat in the front of the car. — внутри.

opposite

Значит «напротив», а это не то же, что in front of:

The bakery is opposite the bank. — они смотрят друг на друга через улицу.
