Три образа

Представьте существительное и спросите, какой оно формы:

• вместилище — то, у чего есть стены, края или границы → in
• поверхность — то, на что кладут сверху → on
• точка — место, которое мыслится как точка на карте → at

in the box, on the box, at the box возможны все три и значат разное.

Одно место, три способа

Какой предлог нужен, зависит от того, как вы на место смотрите, а не от самого места:

• I’ll meet you at the cinema. — место встречи
• I saw it in the cinema. — внутри здания
• There’s a poster on the cinema. — на его стене

Города, здания, адреса

• in с городом, страной, областью: in Bergen, in Norway, in the north
• at со зданием, когда речь о его назначении: at school, at work, at the station
• in со зданием, когда речь о том, что внутри: in the school, in the office
• at с полным адресом, in с улицей: at 14 King Street, in King Street

Транспорт

in в легковой машине и такси, но on в автобусе, поезде, самолёте, корабле и на велосипеде:

She got in the car and I got on the bus.
